During the month of October, 2013, the Ateneo Chemistry Society (ACheS) released its invitation to all bonafide 3rd and 4th year high school students to join the Ateneo Chemistry Olympiad (AChO). ACheS aims to promote the relevant application of chemistry for social engagement toward progressive nation building, and the AChO’s main objective was to create a venue for high school students with exemplary skills and talents in chemistry to come together in the spirit of friendly competition and sportsmanship. Participating schools were to send one team that would would be comprised of three members.
Over 40 schools registered, and Xavier School was represented by three members of the XS Science Guild, namely, Joseph Pua (H4D), Kevin Ong (H4G), and Jaron Uy (H4G). The moderators of the XS Science Guild are Ms. Dece Guillermo and Ms. Ana Pepito of the High School Science department. The team was mentored and coached by Mr. Manchester Sy, HS IB Chemistry teacher.
The contest was held last January 11, 2014, at the Escaler Hall of the Ateneo de Manila University, and on the same day, the winners were announced: Xavier School was awarded over-all champion; St. Jude Catholic School won 2nd place; and Philippine Science High School (main campus) took 3rd place.
On January 15, 2014, the winners were given recognition during the high school assembly. Ms. Dece Guillermo called on the students who won the contest, while Mrs. Jane Cacacho, High School Principal, and Mr. Roberto dela Cruz, High School Science department Chairperson, awarded the certificates.
The year has definitely started right for Xavier School for winning first prize in this prestigious competition. This, hopefully, marks more success for future competitions that the school will partake in.
