Reading allows us to escape into a fantastical world where “literally” anything is possible. Dreams certainly turned into reality as Xavier School celebrated Teen Read Week (TRW) 2014 with a series of special events and literary games and activities.

Students and teachers were enthralled as they engaged in each year level’s respective batch showcase. Grade 7 students visited their younger brothers in Grade 1 to have exciting and magical storytelling sessions. Grade 8 students challenged “masters” of various book genres, their teachers, in the exciting 5 vs. 100 competition. Grade 9 boys were partnered with their big brothers from High 4 in embarking on The Odyssey of the Little Prince, a quiz bee that combined the journey of Odysseus with our beloved Little Prince. The sophomores showed their poetry prowess in the Grade 10 Slam Poetry, and the juniors proved their musical artistry in the High 3 Band Fest, both year levels performing their own compositions.

Every year, the the highlight of TRW is the  Dress Me Literary Parade where people get the chance to be someone (or something) they’ve always wanted to become. This was no exception for TRW 2014. When the students, teachers, administrators, and staff paraded, dressed up as their favorite literary characters, people’s dreams really did turn into reality! Each year level had a specific theme to follow: Grade 7 – Fairy Tales & Children’s Books; Grade 8 – Monsters & Minions; Grade 9 – Comics & Graphic Novels; High 2 – Asian Fables & Folklore; High 3 – Sword and Sorcery; High 4 – Journeys & Expeditions.

Timed just before the infamous “hell week” of students, the events and activities of TRW 2014 became a welcome respite for the students. However, it wasn’t just the students who received this much needed “escape.” As an event-ender for TRW 2014, the HS English department hosted a Poetry Eve where HS teachers could wind down and be among friends and be themselves while listening to poetry and song performances while having hors d’oeuvres and drinks. When the open mic started, many teachers eagerly volunteered to go in front and perform.

TRW 2014 officially ended last October 17, but its spirit lives on in every book that we grab, and in every page that we turn. Whether it is to escape reality or to make your dreams turn into reality, let reading become your daily passion. After all, reading truly is what dreams are made of.
