Greetings of peace!
In line with Xavier School’s thrust on safety and security this school year, we are trying to be more proactive in addressing possible problem areas in the area of formation this school year. You might remember our general assembly talk in the First Quarter on the “Rules for Playing” to ensure that play will not be used as an excuse for bullying and/or hurting others.
This quarter, a module on Respecting One’s Body and Personal Space is being discussed during the Guidance Period.
We use the swimwear rule to identify parts of the body that should not be indiscriminately touched. Specifically, the swimwear rule states that parts of the body which are covered by one’s swimwear generally should not be touched by other people, except under special circumstances like medical check-ups/procedures or other similar situations. This is further expounded on in the higher grades to include respecting personal space and privacy, and safe and unsafe touches.
The module teaches your sons how to protect themselves if someone is invading their personal space by having them
* say “NO! STOP!”
* run or walk away
* shout or scream (especially for the young ones)
* ask for help; inform a safe adult
We share this with you so that you may further reinforce the reminders at home. It is never too early to teach children about safety and security. For concerns questions and more parenting tips, please do not hesitate to contact your son’s Guidance Counselor.
Let us all together exert every effort to keep our Xavier boys safe and happy.
