At exactly 10:30 a.m. on July 30, 2015, the bell rang: four short rings and a long one afterwards, signaling the start of the much anticipated Metro Manila-wide earthquake drill. This is part of the preparations for the much anticipated and feared “big one” predicted to occur sometime in the future. While the bell was ringing, the students, faculty, and staff dutifully followed the duck, cover, and hold procedure, and when the bell stopped ringing, everyone hurriedly but systematically headed for the corridors, stairs, ramp, driveway, basketball court and then out the gate and into the designated evacuation area just across the school. They brought with them their go-bags and covered their heads as well.
Mr. Joel Sulit, the head of the ERDA Tech Safety and Compliance Committee, was on top of the preparations for the drill, working closely with the other members: Mrs. Marge Antonio (Co-chair and Campus Operations Officer), Mr. Jonathan Lacson (Assistant Principal for Formation), Mr. Pierce Gallego (Technical and Vocational Department Chair), Mr. Elmer Bueno (Faculty and Staff Club President), and Mrs. Tracy Ann Rotarta (Prefect of Discipline).
Mr. Sulit also coordinated with the two barangay chairmen: Mr. Alfredo Gaiser (Barangay 839), and Mr. Josaphat Ramos (Barangay 837), as well as the Pandacan fire department personnel in the area.
After everyone had been accounted for and the drill declared a success, the ERDA Tech community went back to the school to resume its daily routine.
The Safety and Compliance Committee shall continue its campaign on disaster preparedness in the coming months, with video presentations and more drills.
