The month of September has been very good to the Xavier Debate Team. Two weeks after they were recognized in this assembly for their feat at the Ateneo Eco-Debates, we are once again proud to announce that Xavier Debate Team A won the IDeA 1 Debate Tournament held last September 26-27 at Colegio San Agustin.
Out of all the student groups who competed, Matthew Araneta of H4E and Ignacio Villarreal of G11D won the competition against two teams from Ateneo and one team from ICA in the final round. Matthew Araneta, who was also part of the Philippine contingent in the World Schools Debating Championship in Singapore last July to August, was awarded with the Best Speaker of the Finals Round. Likewise, he was recognized as the 9th Best Speaker of the Tournament, along with Jacob Wee of G11A.
Jacob Wee and Alfonso Tan of Xavier Debate Team B were able to reach the semifinals round of the competition.
Their victories were not yet over because last October 3-4, our debate team traveled to the Los Baños Campus of University of the Philippines for the 7th Luzon Intervarsity. With great pride, let us congratulate the Xavier Debate Team for their commendable performance at the said debate tournament. XDT was the lone high school contingent in the tournament, and they reached the quarterfinals against collegiate and post-collegiate debaters.
Special mention to Ignacio Villareal and Matthew Araneta for being awarded the Best Novice Team and for splitting the panel (2-3) for the semifinals.
We’d also like to thank the rest of the Xavier Debate Team for representing the school in these various competitions. Likewise, we thank the moderators, Mr. Dan Abrogina of the Guidance Department and Mr. Alwin Reclusado of the CLE Department, the debate coaches and of course, the families of our student debaters for their guidance and support to the team.
