XS San Juan: Grade 9 One2One Program Primer

next header Grade 9 One2One Program Primer
For S.Y. 2016-2017

Welcome dear Grade 9 students and parents!

This primer will help you prepare for the school year by giving you some tips and talking about a few important things you’ll need to know in using your iPad for the One2One program.

What’s App?

One of the more crucial things that we’ll need to maximize the use of the iPad in school is to acquire some applications (apps) that will be used in our classes. Unfortunately, Apple’s volume licensing is not available in Asia yet. This means that, at the moment, the school cannot purchase applications in behalf of the student body, so individual purchases are necessary. The following shows an incomplete* listing of the applications you’ll need for this school year. You are also free to add your own applications, as long as you are mindful of keeping enough space for school work.

*At the moment, there are more than 500,000 apps in the App store. Within the school year, teachers may find apps which may be helpful for their classes. In those cases, we will be asking you to add them to your iPad in preparation for class. Most of the time, these applications will be free. Otherwise, a circular will be sent to explain the nature of the paid applications. The Xavier School required standard apps list can be found at the end of this document.

Registering an Apple ID or iTunes Account

When you first turn on your iPad, it will ask for your iTunes account. Your iTunes account will be used to acquire both paid and free apps. Usually, a credit card is necessary in the registration process. When applications are purchased from the app store, the cost is automatically charged to your credit card. Users who do not have access to a credit card may also purchase some iTunes gift cards from Apple retail stores. To regulate app purchase you may choose to register 2 accounts : One for the parent (with a linked credit card) and one for the student(without a credit card link). This will allow students to download free applications without parents always needing to intervene, and for them to seek their parent’s approval for paid applications.

Tips on taking care of your iPad

The screen
Don’t drop it on hard surfaces. It is glass and it can break.
Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
Do not clean it with window cleaners, glass cleaners, aerosol sprays, abrasives, or alcohol
You can also use a screen protector, to avoid fingerprints and accidental scratches.

The battery

  • Make sure you keep up on the latest iPad updates.  Apple will sometimes make adjustments to software which help in conserving battery life.
  • Go through one charge cycle per month.  To do this all you have to do is charge the iPad to 100% and then run it completely out.

The environment

  • Keep the iPad out of heat above 35°C for an extended length of time.
  • Keep the iPad out of cold below 0°C for an extended period of time.
  • Keep it out of water or extremely humid locations.
  • Do not dry your iPad with an external heat source; e.g. hair dryer (It has been attempted and it did not yield good outcomes.)

External Protection

  • Get a case to cover the unit. Keep in mind the things that you will need to do (read, annotate, type, browse, etc.)
  • For security purposes and proper identification, the school will issue an official sticker/label that should be placed on the iPad unit itself. Distribution of these labels will be done during the First Quarter. (Note: While the stickers are not yet available, students may be asked to provide a temporary label.  Once the official sticker is given out, gadgets without the Xavier sticker may not be brought to school.)

Others

  • Use of other peripherals such as external/bluetooth keyboard or a stylus is allowed, but is optional.

What ifs and Hope nots

What to do when something goes wrong
As with last school year, there will be an Apple representative on campus, stationed at the NExT office, near the HS LRC. If there is any noticeable malfunction of the iPad, please bring the unit to the NExT Office as soon as you can for diagnosis.

Warranty Coverage
Each new unit comes with a 1 year parts and service warranty. If there are any software or hardware defects that is not due to any intervention, these will be covered by the warranty and repaired without charge.

Insurance Coverage
In cases of accidental damage or loss, the warranty will automatically be void, and insurance coverage should be processed to defray costs.

a. If the incident happens in school, the following steps should be taken:

  • File an incident report through the year level ODS Supervisor immediately.
  • Inform BDO Insurance about the incident as soon as you can. (See below)
  • Submit unit to the Apple Center for diagnosis and evaluation.
  • Follow the instructions given by the BDO Insurance representative carefully.

b. If the incident happens outside school, the following steps should be taken:

  • Inform BDO Insurance about the incident as soon as you can. (See below)
  • Submit unit to the Apple Center for diagnosis and evaluation.
  • File a notarised affidavit of accident which relates the incident within 1-3 days.
  • File a Police Report(for loss due to theft/robbery/burglary) immediately.
  • Follow the instructions given by the BDO Insurance representative carefully.

One may borrow an iPad from the NExT Office for temporary use while your claim is in process subject to the policies of the office. Please understand that you may be loaned an older unit.
