Six Filipino students raked gold, silver, and bronze medals as they wrestled difficult Mathematics problems in the recently concluded Junior Balkan Mathematical Olympiad held from June 24 to 29 in Slatina, Romania.
Among these wizards is Xavier’s very own Ryan Mark L. Shao (G10A) who was the lone silver medalist of the team that garnered one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals from among ten guest countries. The contestants, who hailed from several top schools in Metro Manila, were selected and coached by the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG), an organization that trains and coordinates for Mathematics competitions in the international circle.
The competition is the first of many international contests that the Philippine Team joins annually. Shao, who regularly joins this competition, is a staple member of his grade level’s national team.
