One Pride. One Glory.
The Xavier School Ultimate Frisbee faculty team grabbed the Championship in Pool D of the recently concluded B-League Ultimate Tournament organized by JMJ Sports last July 17, 2016 at the Alabang Country Club fields.
Leading the team was Carlo Preza, High School librarian, who was the elected team captain for the said league. When asked to describe the team, he said that he sees the team like the Filipino dessert halo-halo. He shares, “We’re a team composed of members with different strengths…but if you put them together, you will have a superb team!”
With its unique combination of skills and playing experience, the XU faculty team swept all games on day one of the tournament last July 3 and landed on top of their bracket.
Day 2 games on July 10, however, were cancelled due to bad weather so games were moved to the following Saturday, July 16, a day before the finals.
The players from San Juan had their first taste of defeat against Huck U, a mix of players from the South, on Day 2 (6-11), but XU managed to win their remaining games. At the end of eliminations, the team held on to the top spot with a 7-1 win-loss record.
Come finals day, the team came back with a renewed spirit. They managed to win their game in the quarter finals against Stolid (13-7), a team composed of students from Philippine Science, and got themselves a slot in the finals after defeating Saypi, another team representing Philippine Science, in a very close match in the semis (10-9).
The battle for first in Pool D was between Xavier Ultimate Faculty and Black Stags, a mixed team from Cavite. Playing against younger and faster players, like in the two preceding games, XU had to adjust and strategize together. With heart and skills combined, Xavier emerged victorious to bring home the championship after their final game, 15-7. Team Captain Preza says, “It was our mindset…our will to win that propelled us.”
Adding icing to the cake were awards garnered by Preza who was among the players recognized as part of the Mythical 7. When asked about the team’s most important take away from the tournament, he says, “At the end of the day, it’s not about the trophy or the title. It’s about what you’ve learned during the game, the things that you may share and apply to make you a better player/person.”
Making the victory even sweeter is High School Economics teacher, Kristine Carla “Kaycee” Bernardino, who bagged the Finals Most Valuable Female Player Award.
The team was formally recognized during the High School general assembly last August 4, 2016.
The team for B-League was composed of teachers and administrators from the Grade School and High School units of Xavier School San Juan, with a few guest Xavier alumni players and one faculty member from Immaculate Conception Academy (ICA).
